The grade 4 students have just completed a unit on rocks and minerals. They have learned what a sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and the minerals that make them up. To complete this unit we will be going to the Geo Centre on March 10th from 10-2:15pm.
In the morning we will participate in a program that the Geo Centre runs for grade 4 students. This program is called "Geo detectives" They will be give a note pad, streak plate and hand lens. They will be given a "mystery mineral" that they will be required to perform various tests to determine what mineral they have. This is a good way to finish off this lesson as they have been given an opportunity to have some hands on experience with what they have been learning in class. This will engage them and they will be able to better remember the concepts as they have worked on it with their hands.
Once they are finished with this activity they will have recess under the planets that are hung up. They will then precede to look at the rock wall and other sample of rocks they have on display. They will have a worksheet that they will have to complete. It will be a search a find. On the worksheet there will be a list of rocks they will have to find at the Geo centre. They are encouraged to work together to find all the rocks and minerals that is on display to complete the worksheet. Which will be followed by their lunch, which they will need to bring with them as it will not be provided.
To finish off their day they will watch a short film at the Geo's theatre called "Our Planet" This film will provide the students with information on how their earth was created and why volcanoes erupt. They will learn about the different types of rocks.
